About me

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). After completing my undergraduate studies in Psychology and Biology, I earned a Master of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Since 2009, I have used my clinical psychological training as well as Islamic principles based on the Qur’an and Sunnah to inspire my clients to achieve their full potential. I provide individual, marriage, family, and group therapy to clients dealing with a wide range of concerns and diagnoses. Having worked with clients of all ages, ethnicities, and religions, I provide a non-judgmental environment to allow my clients to feel at ease.

I strive to be a compassionate, empowering, and caring clinician. I have worked with survivors of trauma and abuse as well as clients who experience anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-esteem and self-harming concerns, drug abuse, marital and familial issues, grief, and loss. When working with Muslim clients, I often incorporate Islamic principles and spirituality including the Quran and ahadith in order to inspire my clients to utilize their relationship with Allah as a component in their journey toward healing.

My academic activities include teaching about the intersection of Islam with psychology, and counseling at Mishkah University, and publishing as a Research Fellow at Yaqeen Institute where I research issues related to doubt and faith.

My approach to therapy?

I subscribe to a collaborative and direct approach. I will help you explore various effective ways of approaching and responding to the problems you are dealing with. Through therapy, we will identify symptoms, patterns, problems, and areas in your life that are causing you distress, and we will work together to develop a plan of action for how to best address these issues.

I utilize a faith-based approach, incorporating Islamic principles and therapeutic ones with clients who will benefit from this. Research has found that incorporating spirituality and religion into therapy yields positive results. Seeking a Muslim therapist can help gain a holistic approach to counseling that offers both psychological and spiritual help while taking into account cultural context.

Some of the principal ideas we keep in mind as we navigate the therapeutic process include:

  1. “Allah doesn’t change the condition of a person until he/she changes what is within themselves.” This verse shows us that change is possible no matter how stuck you feel;
  2. moving forward typically involves changing how we think and behave in response to past or current events in our lives;
  3. Allah created each of us with emotions. The feelings you experience are a natural part of life and deserve our attention; and
  4. We are not held accountable for our thoughts and emotions but we are held accountable for our actions and these are within our control. We can learn skills to be more effective in dealing with uncomfortable emotions and difficult situations.
